Signs and Symptoms of Autism in Children: What to Look Out For

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour. It is a lifelong condition that affects individuals in different ways, with varying degrees of severity. Autism is often diagnosed in early childhood, and early intervention is essential for better outcomes. In this blog post, we will discuss the signs and symptoms of autism in children, what to look out for, and how to seek help.

Communication Difficulties

One of the most noticeable signs of autism is communication difficulties. Children with autism may have trouble with language development, including delayed speech or no speech at all. They may also struggle to understand and use nonverbal communication, such as gestures, facial expressions, and body language. Children with autism may also have a monotone voice or repeat words or phrases (echolalia).

Social Interaction Challenges

Another sign of autism is difficulty with social interaction. Children with autism may struggle to initiate or respond to social cues, such as making eye contact, initiating conversation, or sharing emotions. They may also struggle to understand social norms or have trouble developing friendships with peers. Children with autism may also have an intense interest in specific topics or objects and have difficulty shifting their attention to other things.

Repetitive Behaviours and Routines

Children with autism may engage in repetitive behaviours or routines. They may have a strong attachment to certain objects or engage in repetitive motions, such as flapping their hands or spinning objects. They may also have difficulty with transitions and changes in routines, becoming upset or agitated when faced with unexpected changes.

Sensory Sensitivities

Children with autism may also have sensory sensitivities, such as sensitivity to light, sound, touch, taste, or smell. They may be either overly sensitive or under-sensitive to sensory input, and this can lead to extreme reactions or avoidance of certain stimuli.

How to Seek Help

Early intervention is crucial for children with autism, and there are many resources available in Singapore to support families. Therapies such as Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA), Educational Support Therapy, Speech and Language therapy and Occupational therapy, as well as educational support and accommodations are all beneficial for children with autism.
